Mother's Counsels

"His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.'" (1)

What Mother Taught Me

As time slipped by and youth faded,
I slowly lost my joie de vie:
My heart darkened; it was jaded --
It dragged my soul through misery.

But from the depths of my despair,
My Mother shook my soul awake:
She took me in Her loving care --
A gentle bond which could not break.

She led my soul through conversion,
Which brought focus to my blank stare.
And through Baptism's immersion
My sight was cleared; my soul laid bare.

She taught me to humbly obey;
The Spirit's prompting is my lead.
Obedience shows me the way
To serve my Lord in word and deed.

She taught my heart how to release
What it had clenched so miserly.
As I let go, the joy won't cease:
I find freedom in poverty.

She taught me how to serve with love;
She models perfect charity:
Selfless giving rises above
My selfish heart's disparity.

These three counsels I now pursue
Through Carmel's call to watch and pray:
To seek my Lord as I serve you,
And lose my self along the Way.
