Hearts Of Deep Soil
"Does he who plows for sowing plow continually?
does he continually open and harrow his ground?
When he has leveled its surface, does he
not scatter dill, sow cumin, and put in wheat
in rows and barley in its proper place, and
spelt as the border? For he is instructed
aright; his God teaches him" 1
"Another said, 'I will follow you, Lord;
but let me first say farewell to those at
my home.' Jesus said to him, 'No one who
puts his hand to the plow and looks back
is fit for the kingdom of God.'" 2
"And he told them many things in parables,
saying: 'A sower went out to sow. And as
he sowed, some seeds fell along the path,
and the birds came and devoured them. Other
seeds fell on rocky ground, where they had
not much soil, and immediately they sprang
up, since they had no depth of soil, but
when the sun rose they were scorched; and
since they had no root they withered away.
Other seeds fell upon thorns, and the thorns
grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell
on good soil and brought forth grain, some
a hundred-fold, some sixty, some thirty.
He who has ears, let him hear." 3
Plowing the Fields
O'ergrown with weeds, the fallow fields
Choke out the Word before it yields.
Baked by the drought, the hardpan clay
Lets rain of grace just wash away.
The pioneer, with plow of prayer,
O'erturns the weeds and makes fields bare;
Cuts through the clay with sweat and toil:
His Word takes root in rich, deep soil.
The rains soak in the crumbled clay.
The plants reach for the Son all day.
They feed by day and grow by night;
Yield hundred-fold in His rich Light.
Prepare the heart with prayer and toil;
His Word yields high in deep, rich soil.
