Mortified By Love

"Jesus replied: This is the first: 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! Therefore you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the second, 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.'" 1

Lord, Mortify Me

Lord, mortify my flesh.
Close my senses to their pleasures;
Open them to heaven's treasures.
I renounce my cravings as dross;
I embrace the wood of the cross.

Lord, mortify my heart.
Empty it of vanity;
Fill it with docility.
I renounce this will of mine;
I embrace Thy Will Divine.

Lord, mortify my soul.
Empty it of profanity;
Fill it with Thy Divinity.
I renounce my worldly wire;
I embrace Love's burning fire.

Lord, mortify my mind.
Empty it of anarchy;
Fill it with serenity.
I renounce reason with a sigh;
I embrace Wisdom from on high.

Lord, mortify my strength.
Empty it of my defiance;
Fill it with complete reliance.
I renounce my self-assurance;
I embrace Thy Omnipotence.

Lord, mortify my all.
Empty me to nothingness;
Fill me with Divine Essence.
I renounce my life entire;
Embrace me with Love's own fire.

Love is loved fully in this fire:
Love's Essence -- my only desire!
